Description

Gillingham, David R.

Lights Across the Water is a fun, quick-step concert march with catchy, toe-tapping melodies, and unexpected twists & turns. Even better, this Grade 3 march can be performed with a mass ensemble by using the free downloadable Gr. 1 & 2 parts.

Program Notes: Lights Across the Water was commissioned by the Waterford Area School Band Festival (WASBF), Waterford, Wisconsin, to commemorate the city’s proposed “Light Project” across the Fox River. The new light project is an exciting venture for the village of Waterford and could be an iconic feature for visitors who pass through the area. Lights Across the Water is a concert march that seeks to celebrate this dazzling new feature of the Waterford area.

The concert march begins with an introduction and the first strain of the march which eludes to the excitement and anticipation of the new light project. The second strain is in contrast to the first and is smoother and more lyrical, depicting, perhaps, the gentle flowing of the Fox River. In contrast to many marches, the 1st strain of the march returns after the 2nd strain followed by a transition to the trio. The trio theme is elegant and stately, reminding one of the beautiful lights across the water. A break strain in G-major ensues and leads to a slower, majestic repeat of the trio. A coda returns to the original march tempo and brings the march to a rousing close, reminding us all of the lights across the water with some dazzling trills in the woodwinds.
